There was a story in Toy Story 2 which suggests that Zurg may in fact be Buzz Lightyear’s father, paralleling the relationship between Luke Skywalker and Darth Vader in star Wars. This idea was addressed when Zurg was first revealed in Light yearBut it doesn’t take long for the real truth to emerge. Zurg is not the father of Buzz Lightyear. zorb he is Buzz Lightyear.
in Light year, Buzz and the entire team of Star Command have been stranded on a distant planet for decades, even though Buzz doesn’t grow up as he experiences super-fast missions that allow him to travel forward in time. He’s focused on finishing the mission to go home while everyone else on the planet starts making a new life for themselves. This is where the Echo of the Future comes into play.
Knowing the people at Star Command didn’t appreciate that stealing a ship solves the problem of excessive speed, this version of Buzz travels far into the future, finding all sorts of robot technology that allows him to become even more powerful. He travels back in time to fix his initial mistake, but his crystal can only take him so far. He needs the new power source that Buzz and Sox built “current”.
This big reveal adds a major layer to Buzz’s relationship with Zurg. They are both versions of the same person, although one has evolved to get past her faults while the other spends years thinking about them.
